The Truth That You Can't Refute

 Dear Duterte,

I believed you in 2016, I believed in your promises. You were supposed to put an end to the corruption of our country. You were supposed to end the cycle of bad presidents in the Philippines. I thought you were different from our country’s past leaders. I thought you were the change the Philippines needed. Boy, I was wrong.

You did a lot for our country, good and bad, but for me, the bad is more memorable because it’s more impactful. Yes, I support your concept of war on drugs but I don’t support how you’re doing it. The so-called “war on drugs” is causing havoc on human rights, did you forget that criminals are humans too? The government admits to 6,000 extrajudicial killings, which is just too much to be considered morally acceptable. The ongoing pandemic is your chance to redeem yourself, to be the true leader of our country that you were meant to be, but you showed your true colors. You responded poorly to the pandemic and now the citizens of our country are paying for your and the government’s incompetence. The Philippines is one of two countries that haven’t reopened schools yet.

The students are crying for help, praying to get more support from the government, yet, we’re still not being listened to, ignored even. To add insult to injury, you approved of the ABS-CBN Shutdown and the Anti-Terror Bill.

But I can still understand you, I can’t imagine being the president of a country with a population of 111 million and still be able to make decisions under constant pressure especially at your age. I like you as the person you are, you’re strong. I respect you for being that bold and that brave. But I hate you as the President of our country, I hate what you do, and I think most people would agree. I still believe you can help the country, I still do, but I also still hope that you will be better for our country.

Yours truly,

Carlo Arheid Plete Guerzon

  1. It's always nice to see young citizens voice out their political opinions. I'm glad that we don't excuse or ignore the bad actions made by our leaders.

  2. I'm pleased the Philippines isn't a totalitarian state like North Korea, China, or Libya, because if it were, this article would be taken down, and you would face legal consequences. I admire those who are willing to publicly criticize the government for its inefficiency and other defects; after all, we gave them the right to control and manage the people, and the Philippines is a democratic nation, so don't be afraid to do so. I agree that Duterte is occasionally inept and arrogant, resulting in unjustified extrajudicial killings. To add salt to the wound, the Philippines is among the countries with the lowest vaccination rates, so why the heck isn't the government doing anything. Get your shit up together Digong.

  3. I wholeheartedly agree. It's extremely clear how inefficient and unsuitable Duterte is in being the president, and seeing people making a stand against it; that's more than enough. And as you said, he should be better. Otherwise, why keep him in power?

  4. I super agree. The "war on drugs" thing that he did, wasn't great and a lot of people have died because of it. also I agree to your statement about school, Philippines is the some of the only countries that haven't did anything to school. To add to that, the way to he handles the pandemic is not really the greatest, and I hate how nothing changed but the vaccines. Overall, I don't really want him as a leader, but then again he still did good stuff toward the country, so props too that.
